The documentary is an important piece of language and history of the cinematography. The first films realized by the Lumières are mostly documents, small bits of real life, from ” Leaving the Lumière factory” to the ” Demolition of a wall ” to the famous “Arrival of the train at La Ciotat.”
The cinema was born for witnessing reality: reports from distant lands, news from war fields, moments from people’s daily life. The fantasy story, the “fantastic” that in the dark of a room appears real, is born afterwards, later in time, after the growth of the documentary. If you want to become good directors, first you will have to make good documentaries.
